Big Week for Westford K-9 Unit

Westford Police Department's K-9 Unit saw donations of a new K-9 SUV Cruiser this week as as well as a monetary donation from students at the Blanchard School and other parts of the community.

  Spearheaded by Westford resident Ginny Burgoyne and the Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog program, the Westford Police Department is now the proud owner of a new SUV specifically made for police dogs. “We couldn’t have purchased the vehicle at this time, without the community’s assistance,” said Westford Police chief Tom McEnaney. Burgoyne worked with Vest-a-Dog to create opportunites for fundraising, including conducting a calendar raffle, accepting donations, coordinating events and acitivites to raise awareness and funds, and wrapping up the effort with a “End of Summer BBQ” at the Tiki Bar at Nashoba Ski Area.  Fundraising exceeded $23,000, provided funding for the K-9 cruiser and equipment for the K-9 Program. “When I saw the old Crown Vic …

Westford's Police HIstory is on Display at the Westford Museum

Current and former police chiefs chronicle the Department's history.

At a panel discussion at the Westford Museum last week, Westford police Chief Tom McEnaney, retired Chief Robert Welch, and retired Sergeant Terrence Kane talked about the history of the Westford Police Department, personal experiences, and the advancements and growth of the WPD's technology and service. “We always looked at the community as number one,” said Welch. “We provide a service to the community.” The discussion was moderated by Ken Tebbets, whose grandfather, John Sullivan, was the first Westford police chief, holding the position from 1926 to 1962. Update on Oak Hill Motorcycle Crash

  According to officials from the Middlesex County Attorney General's office, the motorcycle driver drove through a stop sign during last Sunday's crash near the Rapid Refill. Independent reports indicate the man was Herbert Campbell, 68, of Billerica. Campbell was brought by medflight to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead later that evening. The incident is still under investigation, we will provide more information as it becomes available in future police logs. CORRECTION: We have been told that the individual was 58, not 68.

Motorcycle and Minivan Collide in Latest Oak Hill Accident

A serious accident involving a motorcycle and a minivan occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Groton and Oak Hill Road. in Westford.

A serious accident involving a motorcycle and a minivan occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Groton and Oak Hill Road in Westford. The accident marked the second at that intersection and the third involving Oak Hill Road in less than a month. According to eyewitness reports, the motorcycle came to rest on its side in front of the Rapid Refill and Lowell Five Bank, while minivan parked at the entrance of Philbrick's Motorsports next to Rapid Refill. Damage to the minivan was focused on the driver's side of the vehicle, with significant damage to the windows, two of which were gone, and the doors, which appeared to be caved in. Beverly Man Sentenced Seven to Nine Years on Littleton Road Incident

Beverly resident Michael Whitcomb pled guilty to charges of robbing Littleton Road Liquors in October according to Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone's office.

  A man arrested on charges of robbing Littleton Road liquors last October has now pleaded guilty according to a release from the Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone on Thursday. Michael Whitcomb, 41, of Beverly, had initially pleaded not guilty to charges of unarmed robbery and assault and battery stemming from the October incident. Following the change of his plea, Whitcomb has been given a sentence of seven to nine years in state prison by Lowell Superior Court Judge Janet Kenton-Walker , to run concurrently with his current state prison sentence in Essex County for additional robbery charges. “This defendant has now admitted to robbing a liquor store and, in the process of doing so, viciously attacked the female clerk, …

Man Hit in Oak Hill Crash Has Died

The Lowell Sun is reporting than an 87-year-old man hit by a police cruiser in front of Nab Lake Country Club has died.

  87-year-old Westford resident Thomas Courtney has been declared deceased after a motor vehicle accident on Oak Hill Road last week. The Lowell Sun reports that the officer involved in the crash was not injured, and was responding to a domestic call on Woodbine Terrace. As of Tuesday, the Westford Police Records Department could not provide full details on the incident due to pending investigations. We will have more information as it becomes available.

Westford Police Seeking Assistance on Wednesday Break-In

The suspect left behind a grey Red Sox cap.

  Westford Police are asking for assistance from the public in identifying a man believed to have been breaking into a home near the corner of Dunstable and Long Road. The suspect was described as a white male in his early 20s with dark hair and was wearing a black shirt with the number 47 in the back in gold along with blue jeans and work boots. Additionally, the suspect also left a grey Red Sox cap at the scene (pictured), and police believe his could be based nearby. Westford Police Break Up Two Underage Drinking Parties

  The Westford Police Department report that they’ve responded to a pair of underage drinking parties last week in a press release issued on Tuesday morning. On July 10, officers were dispatched to Hyacinth Drive for a party at 11:45 p.m. Observing several vehicles in the street and several underaged individuals possessing beer cans and red solo cups filled with alcohol before discovering the host of the party, a 17-year-old girl who lived at the residence. Police reported there were no parents or individuals over 21 at the house where the party was held. Early Morning Nashoba Valley Ski Robber Apprehended

  Westford Police Department captain Victor Neal has issued a statement on the arrest of David J. Ward, 27, of Boxboro, on charges of alleged breaking and entering in the night time for a felony, larceny from a building, and malicious destruction of property over $250. According to the statement, police arrived at Nashoba Valley Ski Area's Outlook Restaurant at appoximately 2:30 a.m. to find that the glass door entrance of the building was shattered and that the cash register of the restaurant had been smashed on the floor, with the cash drawer taken. Police Looking for "Beanie" Man in String of Robberies Monday Morning

The Westford Police Department are looking for an intruder who allegedly broke into several homes in the Chamberlain/Hunt/Frances Hill Road area.

  Westford Police have just issued a statement asking for help to identify a man who allegedly broke into several homes in the Chamberlain, Hunt and Frances Hill Road area during the early hours of July 9. One homeowner spotted the man inside his residence, although a search of the surrounding area proved unfruitful, police said. The intruder was only described as a male wearing a colorful "beanie" hat. Another resident was awoken nearby by someone ringing their doorbell and a nearby unlocked motor vehicle was found with items missing.
