The Westford Academy baseball team started their postseason on the right foot, but the softball team couldn't pull out a win against Lowell.
Two Westford Academy teams took to the diamond on Thursday, but only one was able to advance as the baseball team defeated Salem by a score of 12-1; while the softball team lost to Lowell, 5-3. In Salem, the Ghosts got off to a quick lead, getting six runs in the first, and held the Witches' bats at bay thanks to three scoreless innings of relief from Ryan Pocock, and a strong start from Will Alden, who is now 6-0 on the season. The pair combined to give up only one walk and scatted seven hits while striking out nine. Alden gave up the only Salem run in the fourth, but he was able to make up for it with a double later that inning, accompanied by multi-hit days from Riley Cox and John Troy, and Mike Bibinski in what was a 17 hit day for …

For the first half of the contest, it appeared that the Ghosts were in control and primed for the upset. Junior Alleana Brody retired seven of the first eight batters she faced, and the Academy was getting some key help at the plate as well.
