S'No More! 3-7 Inches of Snow Saturday Into Sunday

Westford could see around a half a foot of more snow Saturday night into Sunday.

There are still huge snowbanks everywhere from the Blizzard of '13, even after moderate temperatures this week, but Old Man Winter isn't done with Westford yet. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until Sunday at 1 p.m. for a storm that will pass through the area starting Saturday night. The forecast calls for 1-3 inches of snow on Saturday night and another 2-4 inches on Sunday, mainly before 4 p.m. Visibility won't be great either, as winds could gust as high as 43 mph on Sunday, blowing the snow around and producing wind chill values as low as -2 on Sunday night. The gusty winds will continue on Presidents Day, which will be sunny with a high near 32 but wind chill values as low as -4.

As we hunker down for this storm in Westford, let’s take a look back at the Blizzard of ’78. Here are some fun videos from TV and radio broadcasts before, during and after the storm, as well as home movies on YouTube… Let’s start off with the TV news weather reports Here’s a radio broadcast from WBZ An old WEEI …

Does Everybody in Westford Still Have Power?

Despite all the snow, it looks like the electricity's holding steady, and we want to check around town to see who still has their lights on.

Back during the Halloween storm, around 4,000 to 5,000 Westford residents lost power, and after this big storm, we're asking again. However, this time it looks like nobody's lost any power. Is that accurate? Did your lights flicker a little? Is National Grid's map wrong? Let everybody know in the comments below! We'll head out once the storm dies down and doublecheck around town. The Weather Channel is predicting another 4 to 6 inches on Saturday, while Accuweather is predicting 1 to 3 inches and the National Weather Service is predicting 4 to 8.

The map above, provided by the National Weather Service, shows snowfall in the past 24 hours. It is updated every 6 hours. This is not a map showing overall snow depth: It only tracks the amount of snow that has fallen in the past day. The map is centered around the red marker, which is in the middle of Westford Patch's coverage area.

Why Do Snowstorms Have Names Now?

Not all meteorologists accept the name game, or acknowledge this storm as Nemo.

You've probably heard occasional—but perhaps not frequent—references to this winter storm as "Nemo." While it makes for some good jokes about that cute little orange fish, Nemo is not the brainchild of the Disney Corporation, but rather, a pre-determined name The Weather Channel gave to this latest storm. If you missed it: The Weather Channel in November announced it would name "noteworthy winter storms" in the 2012-2013 winter season. Sure, snowstorms have been informally named after the fact (remember Snowtober?) This is the first season, however, that The Weather Channel is naming them as it does hurricanes and tropical storms. The rationale? According to the Weather Channel, names raise awareness, make it easier to follow a weather …

Morning Forecast Puts Westford Snow Totals Closer to Three Feet

A blizzard warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.

OK, so that two feet of snow we here in Westford were preparing to get last night? Better add another foot to that. The National Weather Service on Friday morning adjusted its predicted snowfall totals to three feet. The timing of the snowfall is roughly the same: with light snow falling in Worcester, Middlesex and Norfolk counties Friday morning, and becoming heavy later in the afternoon and into the Friday evening commute. So, as WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner notes in his blog, you have a "few hours left this morning" to run some errands, but travel will deteriorate this afternoon. By 7 tonight, most towns will have 2 to 4 inches, Reiner predicted. The storm should be the worst from 7 p.m. Friday to noon tomorrow, when snow could fall…
