Arciero Votes No on Proposed Gas, Cigarette Tax

The bill, which passed 97-55, would raise $500 million, but is expected to be vetoed by the governor.

Joining 25 other Democrats as well as all of Massachusetts' Republican state representatives, State Representative James Arciero voted against a bill on Monday night slated to provide funding improvements for transportation across the state. “I voted against this transportation tax proposal because it hits our commuting workforce particularly hard, raises the overall transportation costs on goods and products made by Massachusetts companies, and I fear will drive even more economic activity over the border to New Hampshire,” said Arciero. Designed to appropriate $500 million, the bill specifies raising the state's gas tax by 3 cents ($110 million), raising the cigarette tax by $1 a pack ($165 million), updating tax codes on "canned …

Arciero Says State Budget Is Still A Long Process

State Representative James Arciero says that Governor Deval Patrick's proposed budget released last week is only the first step in a long process, and that the numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.

Last week, Governor Patrick released a $34.8 billion proposal for the state budget, Westford's representative in Boston is saying that number might change before all is said and done. Calling it "the first quarter of a four quarter game," State Representative James Arciero is urging community leaders and his constituents in Littleton, Westford and Precincts 5,7 and 8 in Chelmsford to note that total amount may change during the legislative process that will result in a final budget. Patrick's proposal, also known as House Bill 1, proposes revenue shifts to add $553 in new K-12 education funding, $269 million for transportation needs, $152 million for college affordability and $226 more for Chapter 70 local aid funding. "I'm not convinced…

As always the eyes are bigger than the stomach. $4 billion for NEW rail extensions to Fall River, Springfield, Pittsfield and Hyannis will not be worth the cramps. Green Line should be fixed in its present form, before any extension. The I-93/I-95 (128) Woburn interchange does not need to be replaced, nor a new Wilmington interchange on I-93 needed. All the reconstruction headaches not worth the …   more ›

Arciero Defeats Wormell By Substantial Margin

State Representative James Arciero defeated Westford selectman Val Wormell by nearly 7,000 to earn his third term on Beacon Hill.

James Arciero has defeated challenger Val Wormell by a margin of almost 7,000 votes, a margin substantially larger than his first victory four years ago. Arciero (D-Westford) earned his third victory in the Second Middlesex House District, following a win over Littleton Republican Paul Avella in 2008 and an uncontested race in 2010. "Just to fight to increase local and fight for every last dollar communities deserve, we had successes in 2012 and we're not where we want to be, but we're heading in the right direction.," said Arciero, who said that Wormell ran a spirited campaign in his victory speech. "We continue to buck the trend better than most districts in the Commonwealth and also I think there's more room for reform in …

Wormell underestimated the impact that she and the BOS made on TEACHERS last year with a penned letter stating 'frustration' and 'disappointment' in the Westford teachers/WEA for standing up for themselves. Hey Val there are a lot of voters who are teachers, family of teachers, supporters of teachers who have long memories!   more ›

Arciero and Wormell Square Off In Second Middlesex House District Debate

The two candidates shared their views on issues ranging from the bottle bill to higher education funding.

Here's a question by question recap overview of what State Representative Jim Arciero (D-Westford) and Selectman Val Wormell (R-Westford) said during their debate at Nashoba Valley Technical High School on Wednesday night. What Would Be Your #1 Priority If Elected? Wormell – Increasing local aid to towns, particularly in terms of getting funds for special education funding mandates. Arciero – Fighting to get every last dollar for towns, continuing reforms that have brought savings to towns in the district like municipal healthcare reform, which brought approximately $250,000 in savings to Littleton and Westford and approximately $1 million in savings to Chelmsford. What Are The Key Priorities When It Comes to Local Environmental Issues …

I would like to know the opinion of the candidates on Massachusett's entry into the National Populatr Vote Intersate Compact that quietly occurred during the 2009-2010 legislative calendar. Are they in favor of this compact? If no, what actions would they take to repeal the law? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact   more ›

VIDEO: Arciero vs. Wormell

Both competitors for the Middlesex Second House District seat gave their stump speeches at events earlier this month.

Election Day is only about a month away, and the race is heating up between Selectman Val Wormell (R-Westford) and State Representative James Arciero (D-Westford) to see who will represent Littleton, Westford and precincts 5,7 and 8 of Chelmsford on Beacon Hill. Here are videos of the two candidates from speeches they made in Westford earlier this month. Editor's Note: We could not confirm with the Wormell campaign which of Arciero's votes Wormell was mentioning in her speech. We believe it was Roll Call #281, an amendment to tie MBTA funding to Chapter 90 Local Aid funding that was defeated, shortly before the original bill (H. 4161) was passed.

Arciero: Explosion of Economic Activity Over Four Years

In case you missed it, here's a look back at some of the key points from our live chat yesterday with State Representative James Arciero (D-Westford).

In case you missed it, here's are some excerpts by State Representative James Arciero during Patch's live chat with him yesterday.   Westford Patch We've had a few stories this week about Cornerstone Square, for folks reading this chat from outside of Westford, it's a big commercial development just off Exit 32. You've sponsored legislation to help get them aid with liquor licenses, can you tell us more about that? James Arciero Sure, the Westford Board of Selectman and town meeting voted to petition the General Court for two additional liquor licenses specific to Cornerstone. Leo There has been a push in Chelmsford over the past few years to redistrict so that Chelmsford has one state rep (or less state reps) instead of its current four…

Andrew, Anything further on the request for Bill Olsen and/or Jim Antonelli to come live on the patch to take questions? There are so many valid questions the community wishes to ask of these school leaders which are not beling answered on their own that I know we are looking for some answers with all that has been going on. Seems there was another 'incident' involving narcotics at WA just this …   more ›

Westford's Legislators Bring State Budget News to Selectmen

The two sides had a discussion over topics such as mandates, budget cuts and other state/local cooperation issues.

In a potential preview of what Westford’s short term fiscal future, State Senator Eileen Donaghue and State Representative Jim Arciero came before the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday to give an overview of what the town can expect in terms of local aid from  the state. In an overview, Westford’s legislators told the Selectmen that they expect local aid funding to be comparable to last year, although nothing is guaranteed until the process is concluded, with Arciero saying that things are “in the first quarter of the fourth quarter of the game.” Although the pair of legislators cited difficult budgetary decisions from the state such as last year’s legislation regarding municipal healthcare insurance negotiations and reforming the state’s …
