Does The Farmers' Market Cause Safety Concerns?

It was a topic of discussion at last week's Board of Selectmen meeting, today we want your take.

During that Selectmen's meeting last week with all the town employees, another topic came on the agenda: the seventh year of the Westford Farmers' Market Westford Farmers' Market spokesperson Gloria Gilbert said in a statement to Westford Patch that she was "extremely satisfied that evening. I felt the support and willingness of the town's departments to make the farmers market work.  (The Town Departments) came together and pitched in to help make it happen. It is one of the reasons that makes Westford such a good place to live." The Market has faced criticism regarding traffic and parking in the past the concerns voiced during last week's meeting were around safety, particularly around loading and unloading practices and pedestrian …

Please consider the tragedy at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market 10 years ago where 10 people died and 63 others were injured. After that incident, the NTSB concluded that any municipality that ran such a farmers market must place steel barriers at intersections to prevent vehicle incursions. Please consider that any steps less than these will increase your municipal liability and leave vendors …   more ›

Selectmen Will Discuss Town Common Fees

The topic was introduced on Tuesday night after budget concerns were raised by Parks and Recreation Department director Pat Savage and Parks and Recreation Commission chairman Kacy Kaviston.

The question of whether outside groups should pay for using the Town Common will be continued as a topic at the next Board of Selectmen meeting following a discussion brought to the Board by Parks and Recreation officials on Tuesday night. Parks and Recreation Commission chairman Kacy Caviston told the Selectmen that the Common was now taking up 10 percent of the department’s budget while making up only 2.5 percent of the total land area within the department’s responsibility. However, the tipping point came from a recently installed irrigation system and increasing fuel and equipment costs that have not been accompanied by increases in the department’s budget. Caviston and Parks and Recreation Department director Pat Savage floated the …

The Westford Farmer's Market, sponsored by Sustainable Westford, is not currently registered as a non-profit organization, (I.R.S. 501 (c) (3)). Sustainable Westford is charging a Seasonal Fee for all the Farmer's and Vendors that participate on a weekly basis. I don't know how much, but it is enough to have turned away one of their local Farmer's (that participated from the beginning) and they …   more ›

It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become..." ~ Lady Bird Johnson Sustainable Westford is working to connect the Westford community and beyond to the land and the environment. Working in partnership with members, volunteers and like minded organizations is at the heart of our work. Westford Farmers' Market Staying on Common for 2012

The Westford Board of Selectmen unanimously approved use of the Common to the market, which will run on Tuesdays from June to October.

Before an overflowing room of onlookers, the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously on Tuesday night to give permission for the Westford Farmers' Market use of the Town Common this year, while committing town resources to increasing pedestrian and traffic safety associated with the event. Although support for the market’s existence currently appears to be near universal in town, two viewpoints arose during a debate simmering prior to the meeting. On one side, residents have been showing concern for traffic backups on Boston Road during market days, especially once road construction near Minot’s Corner began in earnest for the upcoming Cornerstone Square project. On the other side, residents had been advocating to keep the market in the …

POLL: Where Should The Westford Farmers' Market Be Located?

It's been a topic of discussion in Westford recently and today we're looking for some clarity on what the next step should be.

Over the past few weeks, we've gotten over 70 comments as of today on one blog recommending that the Westford Farmers' Market move from the Town Common to another location in town like the Roudenbush Community Center or the Abbot School. The consensus from that piece appears to be that everyone wants the Westford Farmers' Market to continue and thrive in town. However, there are fears around parking near the town center and traffic, particularly in the late Summer and early Fall with construction at Minot's Corner taking place. Today we ask you, the readers of Westford Patch what you think the answer should be for where the Westford Farmers' Market calls its home from the Spring to the Fall. Should it remain in the Common? Should it head…

LETTER: Farmers' Market Wants to Thank Eric's

The following is a letter to the editor. To submit your own letter to the editor, e-mail us at westford@patch.com

Dear Editor, Sustainable Westford would like to thank the many who came and supported our Winter Farmers Market at Eric's Garden Center this past season.  It was off to a slow start and we had some bumps and bruises easing into this new venue.   There was a learning curve working together, it is not every day that a business opens its doors wide open for a non profit to promote its mission.  We all learned much from this experience from the Market Managers, vendors and Eric's staff and in the end it started to prove itself.     Maybe with a little luck our farmers can earn enough to build a few greenhouses to carry them and the community thru the next winter season.  Let's hope and continue to support  our local hard working farmers. …

To bad Tom Goddard, the Owner of Eric's Garden Center, doesn't more closely screen, select, and train his part-time teenage workers to make certain that they are taught how to treat the Westford Farmer's Market customers (and vendors) with some courtesy and politeness. Perhaps this is why the "experiment" took so long to "prove its self"? Personally, if you decide to go back to Eric's next Winter…   more ›

LETTER: Westford Winter Farmers' Market Needs Your Help

The following is a letter to the editor. If you would like to send your own letter, please e-mail us at westford@patch.com

Dear Editor, We know our community values their Westford Farmers Market. They know it influences positive social change, creates a stronger and economically vibrant community, and fosters healthy relationships between food, land and farmers we often take for granted. Every season together, we grow and enrich ourselves and our community more and more, like "topsoil being miraulously rebuilt little by little each year".  Our Westford Farmers Market is worth protecting, in fact it is worth celebrating. Let's start the New Year with a "Celebration of Thanks - Straw Poll and Raffle" and vote for your Favorite Vendor.  Bragging rights go to Winning Vendor, and you can a prize if your name is drawn from the winning vendor's tickets. (Prizes …

The student volunteers have always been polite, helpful and cheerful in any of my dealings with them even on the hottest days of summer. The fact that we have a winter market that supports local farmers and businesses, should not be overlooked, and seems to me that participating in the market in Westford on Saturday mornings would be more fitting to those so closely involved, i.e. farmers, …   more ›
