In the light of last week's tragedy in Connecticut, the Westford School Committee concludes their discussion on bringing a School Resource Officer to Westford Academy.
As the country continues to mourn last Friday’s tragic events, the Westford School Committee met on Monday evening to conclude discussion of the installation of a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Westford Academy. The proposed SRO was recommended by the board in September, and became possible for this year thanks to fiscal adjustments approved at Fall Town Meeting. After a moment of silence to open the meeting, Superintendent Everett Olsen, Jr. and the School Committee members discussed methods to increase school safety both in the short term and long term. “Nothing is fool proof in life but we are going to be as responsible towards security as any school system in the country”, Olsen said. I think we're going a overboard here. The number of kids dying in school is low http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/youthviolence/schoolviolence/savd.html Aside from periodic spikes there has been little change since 1992. In a letter to parents on Friday afternoon, Westford Academy principal James Antonelli indicated that no drugs were found on campus during an unannounced "Building on Alert" search earlier that day. The search, which was conducted by the school in conjuction with the Westford Police K-9 unit and other local law enforcement agencies. Friday's search took approximately 35 minutes according to Antonelli, with instruction continuing while hallways and parking lots were emptied. Currently, the search conducts 2 to 3 of these unannounced random searches per year under its current policies. Dogs can be trained to smell anything, oxy is off the list in many situations because people have legal scripts for it so it would hold things up if they were stopping all the time for oxy. You would have to know whether or not the dog used in the searches is trained to find oxy or hydro codone. It's possible given his area of work he is, it's also possible like you said, he isn't. Westford Academy rose five spots from last year on the magazine's prestigious list of the best high schools in the greater Boston area.
Westford Academy was recently named as #22 on Boston Magazine's top 50 high schools in Eastern Massachusetts for 2012. The result marks a five place improvement from its 27th place finish in the magazine's 2011 list. Westford also ranked third among cost per pupil on the list, falling behind only Georgetown and Millis High Schools. Westford did better than neighboring Littleton, which was #31, but was below other nearby schools such as Lincoln-Sudbury (#16), Acton-Boxborough (#9), Concord-Carlisle (#4) and Lexington (#2). The list was calculated from a variety of factors taken from over 200 high schools in the greater Boston area.

As the calendar flips to August, thoughts start to turn to the first day of the new school year. When Westford Academy opens its doors for the school year, a brand new crop of freshmen will begin the wild, four-year (in most cases) journey that is high school. The Lowell Sun reports that a 19-year-old Westford woman allegedly provided cocaine to her other students for free.
Natalie Taylor Hill, 19, 1 Garrett Dr. pleaded not guilty in Ayer District Court on Wednesday to charges of alleged distribution of a Class B drug, distribution of cocaine to a minor and school-zone drug violations. In a Lowell Sun report, Ayer District Court judge Marc Sullivan released the 2012 Westford Academy graduate on personal recognizance with the conditions that she continue medications and mental-health treatement. Hill allegedly indicated to police that she purchased drugs five times from a man in Lawrence she only knew as "Rock" and that she would "stock up" by bringing three small baggies of cocaine to school, but would provide the drug to other students without free of charge.
