Girls Lacrosse Wins North Sectional Crown

Westford Academy fell behind early but overcame North Andover and pulled away with the North Division 1 championship win.

In the postgame scrum of cheering parents and players, a Westford Academy fan said to the team "Thank you for a great season." The response came quickly from a Grey Ghost player. "It's not over yet," she said with a smile. Westford Academy won the North Division 1 championship on Thursday afternoon with a 13-7 win over North Andover and advanced to take on Notre Dame Academy in a Tuesday state playoff game. It wasn't the usual game day for the Grey Ghosts. The school went into lockdown for several hours in search of a missing student. As a result, students were sent home early and graduation rehearsal was postponed. Girls Lacrosse Cruises Into North Semifinal

The top-seeded Grey Ghosts have outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 34-5 in two playoff games, including a 14-4 win on Friday over Andover.

Through two games, the playoffs are no contest for the Westford Academy girls lacrosse team. The Lady Grey Ghosts backed up a 20-1 win over Lowell in the first round of the North Division 1 playoffs with a 14-4 win on Friday in the quarterfinals. As a result, the top-seeded locals are two wins from a sectional title. Following Friday's dominating performance over Andover, Westford will take on No. 4 seed Masconomet in the semifinal round. That contest is slated for Tuesday at 5 p.m. on the turf of Westford Academy. The winner will take on Framingham, North Andover, or Peabody in the tournament final. The date for that game is yet to be determined.

Grey Ghost Softball Advances With Playoff Win Over Chelmsford

Westford Academy snagged a 5-2 preliminary round win on Thursday afternoon and will play at least one more game.

Westford Academy softball players aren't on summer break quite yet. That's because the Grey Ghosts opened their postseason with a 5-2 win over nearby Chelmsford on Thursday afternoon in the preliminary round of the North Division 1 tournament. With the victory, Westford advanced to face No. 2 seed Framingham on the first round of the bracket. Framingham enters the game coming off of a preliminary round bye thanks to a regular season record of 18-2. The contest is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the winner to take on either Methuen or Newton North in the quarterfinals.

Grey Ghost Baseball, Softball Snag Playoff Spots

Westford Academy is heading to the diamond in upcoming days for playoff action.

For a pair of Westford Academy teams, the season lives on. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association released its baseball and softball playoff pairings on Tuesday, and the Grey Ghosts are involved in both. In North Division 1 baseball, Westford Academy finished off a 13-7 regular season. As a result, the locals snagged the No. 11 seed and will take on No. 6 Everett on Saturday at 4 p.m. in a first round match up scheduled for Malden's Pire Banks field. The Lady Grey Ghosts will begin their postseason in the preliminary round of the North Division 1 tournament, earning the No. 15 seed with a 12-8 record. Grey Ghost Boys Lacrosse Earns Postseason Berth

The MIAA released its playoff pairings on Friday and Westford Academy will enter the tournament as the No. 10 seed.

The Lady Grey Ghosts won't be the only Westford Academy lacrosse team in the postseason. In addition to the top-seeded girls lacrosse team, the boys lacrosse team learned on Friday their postseason fate as the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association released its brackets. Thanks to a regular season that featured a 12-8 record, the Grey Ghosts earned the No. 10 seed. As a result, Westford Academy will host Medford on Wednesday at 5 p.m.  With a victory, the locals would advance to the first round to face Xaverian, the No. 7 seed in the tournament that earned a preliminary round bye. The date and time of that game has yet to be determined.

Girls Lacrosse Snags No. 1 Seed in Postseason

The MIAA announced its playoff pairings on Thursday, and Westford Academy will enter the tournament as the team to beat.

Westford Academy is the team to beat in Division 1 girls lacrosse. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association announced its postseason pairings on Thursday, and the Grey Ghosts snagged the No. 1 seed thanks to a sparkling regular season record of 19-1. As a result, Westford earned a bye in the preliminary round of the tournament. In the first round, the locals will take on either No. 16 Haverhill or No. 17 Lowell. The Lowell versus Haverhill match up is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. The winner won't have much time to rest up, as Westford awaits in a game slated for Tuesday at 4 p.m. If the Grey Ghosts are able to advance, they will take on either Billerica or Andover in the quarterfinal round of the North Division 1 bracket. …

Lincoln-Sudbury Topples Westford Boys Lacrosse

The visitors led the Grey Ghosts throughout Tuesday's contest, leaving town with a 14-8 victory.

Lincoln-Sudbury sits atop the Dual County League boys lacrosse standings. And on Tuesday, they showed Westford Academy why that's the case. Despite a solid effort from the Grey Ghosts, visiting Lincoln-Sudbury dictated tempo throughout and went on to a 14-8 victory. With the loss, Westford dropped to 11-6 on the campaign, 4-3 in Dual County play, while LS improved its mark to 12-2 with a 6-1 record in league play.

Strong Second Half Pushes Girls Lacrosse Past Chelmsford

Westford Academy led 3-2 at halftime but cruised past the Lady Lions in the second half and grabbed a 14-6 win.

The Westford Academy girls lacrosse team was locked in a one-goal game when halftime arrived versus Chelmsford on Tuesday afternoon. But thanks to a second half outburst, it was smooth sailing for the Grey Ghosts the rest of the way. After leading, 3-2, at the intermission, Westford opened the floodgates with its offensive attack. The Lions chipped away and made the score 8-6 midway through the second half, but the Grey Ghosts then scored six consecutive goals to seal a 14-6 win.

Late Chelmsford Rally Beats Grey Ghost Baseball

Westford Academy had a lead with two outs in the seventh inning, but the Lions rallied to tie the game and eventually won, 3-2, in extra innings.

The Westford Academy baseball team entered the final frame with the lead, and recorded the first two outs within the blink of an eye. But just as quickly, the Grey Ghost lead escaped as Chelmsford mounted a comeback and eventually earned an extra inning victory. After putting down the first two batters of the visiting seventh inning, Westford Academy's outfield couldn't handle a long fly ball, putting Chelmsford's Jack Campsmith on third base with two outs. The next batter, Michael DeDonato, knotted the game at 2-2 with a hard single just inside the third base bag. After a scoreless eighth inning, Chelmsford struck again in the ninth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory.
