Hi Judy, That's a good point. It's one of the weird things about Chelmsford Street -- on the map Chelmsford Street is a hypotenuse in a triangle with Rte. 3 and 495. It's closer on 3 than 495, but probably another minute or two more of driving depending on traffic and Stop and Shop/Market Basket. I'll add 495 too.   more ›

How to Keep Your New Year's Resolution

Five tips to help you keep your resolution.

Are folks in Westford making a resolution this year? Do you want to lose weight, gain a new skill or organize your house? Whatever your resolution is, here are some tips to help you stick to it throughout the year. 1. Make it attainable. Be sure that your resolution is attainable. Sticking to your monthly budget is attainable—making a million dollars may not be. 2. Tell everyone. If you tell everyone about your resolution, you are more likely to keep it. If you want to quit smoking, you can even go as far as telling your friends that you'll give them $50 if they catch you lighting up. 3. Be specific. If you want to get fit in the new year, set a specific goal. For example, instead of saying you want to get fit, say you want to lose 10 …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let…

When Does Daylight Savings Time End in 2012?

These dark mornings have you wondering: When does Daylight Savings Time end?

Those 7:30 a.m. commutes will get darker before they get lighter. Officially, Daylight Savings Time doesn’t end for a couple more weeks – officially at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. Remember, you’ll “fall back” and set your clocks back one hour. Many electronic devices automatically adjust when Daylight Savings Time begins or ends. When you change your clocks in the fall and spring, it’s also a good time to change smoke detector batteries and check to make sure device are in working order. Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa do not observe Daylight Savings Time. It begins again on March 10, 2013. ...

Raise a Beer Stein to Oktoberfest 2012

Get your lederhosen out—Oktoberfest is here!

Before Halloween is here, there’s another not-so-spooky way to celebrate the fall: the German holiday of Oktoberfest! While you're looking forward to dressing up in a costume and nearly getting a cavity from the candy intake, you can don knee socks and feast on bratwursts and beer. In its native Bavaria, Germany, Oktoberfest is traditionally celebrated for 16 days, and this year the fun goes from Sept. 22—Oct. 7. It is one of the most spirited celebrations in Germany, and is a huge part of Bavarian culture. The first Oktoberfest was in 1810, as part of Crown Prince Ludwig’s wedding festivities, and has continued ever since. Oktoberfest sends lots of Americans to the store to stock up on sausages and spirits during the celebration. …

Should Columbus Day Be Re-Dedicated as Exploration Day?

There's a petition for it on the White House website asking President Obama to pair Christopher Columbus with other famous explorers in human history like Neil Armstrong. What are your thoughts?

Many of you have the day off today thanks in part to Christopher Columbus' journey in 1492, but today we want to ask whether today's holiday should be shared with other explorers in human history. That's what one petition on the White House website is asking President Obama to do, citing the president's words praising Neil Armstrong after his death earlier this year. What do you think? Should Columbus and Armstrong be viewed as equals in a holiday that celebrates human exploration? Should Armstrong, and other explorers get separate holidays of their own? Or should Columbus Day remain the same, or for that matter, should Columbus not get a holiday due to claims of his legacy on Native American populations and actions after his voyages …

Celebrating Columbus Day

Columbus Day is on Monday, Oct. 8 this year.

Columbus Day, a nationally recognized federal holiday, falls on Monday, Oct. 8 this year. While it is an opportunity for some to sleep in on a Monday, the holiday itself is also interesting, and a great time to celebrate and shop. Columbus Day remembers Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the “New World." The voyage was victorious when land was first spotted on Oct. 12, 1492. The day is also considered a celebration of Italian heritage, as well as a huge shopping day in the U.S.  President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is responsible for making the holiday a federal one in 1937. What is closed on Columbus Day? Most banks, government offices and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed to observe the…

National Coffee Day Is Coming!

Get your caffeine on and celebrate with a free cup of coffee.

If the first words out of your mouth every morning are, “I’ll have a large coffee”—or if you can’t even speak until after you’ve had your java fix—there's a national holiday created especially for you. America will put staunch tea drinkers to shame on National Coffee Day on Sept. 29, when coffee fiends can rejoice and celebrate their beloved coffee bean with free brew from national chains. Coffee was first brought to America in the mid-1600s in a shipment en route to “New Amsterdam,” now known as New York, according to the National Coffee Association. We have that shipment and the Boston Tea Party to thank for turning the nation into coffee drinkers.   Many local cafes and businesses are participating in the national celebration. National …
