Westford Will Retain Police Captain Position in January

Although Westford Police captain Joseph Roy has announced his retirement effective in January 2013 after 37 years on the force, the Board of Selectmen voted 4-1

It’s official: Westford will have a new police captain come January of 2013. Westford Police chief Thomas McEnaney announced to the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday that Captain Joseph Roy will be retiring after 37 years in the department, an announcement that began a debate over whether his position should be filled upon his retirement. The board ultimately voted 4-1, with Jim Sullivan opposing, to maintain the captain position that would be vacated by Roy’s departure, although there were extensive concerns from the board despite the final tally of the vote. Most of the opposition to the move came from concerns over a looming Fiscal Year 2014 shortfall that may necessitate a reduction in staff positions. McEnaney responded to this by noting …

Based on the fiscal condition of the town of Westford, I am totally amazed that this position was not eliminated along with the Deputy Chief position. It is time that the Board of Selectmen stop their fiscally irresponsible actions. $100,000 and $100,000 there pretty soon we can get to $10 million.   more ›
