The Girls Of Girl Scout Troop 60480 Are This Week's Whiz Kids

They helped gather nearly 40 bags of non-perishable food for local needy families.

This week’s Whiz Kid of the week isn’t just one Whiz Kid, but an entire troop of them.

Girl Scout Troop 60480 reached out those in need with their work recently, helping to collect 38 bags filled with various non-perishable food items from donations throughout Westford for the Westford Food Pantry.

The Pantry, which feeds 200 needy local area families each week, helped open the eyes of some of the youngsters who worked hard to make their community a better place.

“I wasn’t aware there were so many needy families around here before we started,” said Troop 60480 member Shannon Tierney. “It felt good helping them.”

Tierney and her fellow Girl Scouts put together a flyer and went around their neighborhoods letting neighbors know about the effort, coming back a week later to collect the food items for the drive.

For Shannon’s mother Heidi, this activity was just one of many important tasks Westford’s 500 Girl Scouts and 75 Girl Scout parents take part in on a regular basis to help turn Westford’s girls into responsible adult members of the community.

“This was important for the girls, it helped the girls see a task from the beginning to the end and see a positive result with all the volunteers at the food pantry,” said Heidi, who is also one of Troop 60480's troop leaders. “Things like this are great, they help visualize ways for the girls to help their community.”
