This Week In Sports: Fall 2011 Openers

A look back in review of recent events in Westford sports.

We’ll have full wrapups of both the Westford Academy and Nashoba Valley Tech games on Monday, but in the meantime, here’s a look at some recent news and notes from the world of sports related to Westford.

Jackie MacMullan To Receive Award At UMass Lowell

On September 30, Westford resident , Westford Youth Basketball Association coach and nationally renowned ESPN and Boston Globe columnist Jackie MacMullan will receive the “For the Love of Sports” award as part of UMass Lowell’s first annual “Dream of Perfect Games Celebration of Sport” event.

She receives the award alongside the siblings of a former UMass Lowell baseball player who suddenly passed away earlier this year.

“I'm so honored to be recognized by UMass Lowell,” said MacMullan. “I love the area and all the opportunities it has afforded myself and my family. We have enjoyed many athletic activities at the University through the years, including field hockey and men and women's basketball games.”

Young Westford Girl Sings God Bless America At Fenway

6-year-old Alexa DiBisceglie lived the dream of countless baseball fans late last month when she sang God Bless America during the seventh-inning stretch at the Red Sox-Yankees game.

Currently a first-grader at the , DiBisceglie has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and a severe seizure disorder.

Her performance is currently available on Youtube.

A Bright Spot In Westford Academy’s Fall Season Opening Week

While the Grey Ghosts weren’t able to pull out a win on the football field against Chelmsford on Friday, the girls’ field hockey team was able to avoid a loss against hated rival Acton/Boxorough earlier in the day, ending in a scoreless draw at home as sophomore netminder Allison Avery was able to stymie the Colonials, ending the contest with nine saves.

The Grey Ghosts will return to the field on Monday against Waltham.
