State Title Among Long List of Week's WA Accomplishments

It was a busy week for Grey Ghost teams, with plenty of athletes earning team and individual accolades.

When narrowing down who to feature for this week's Westford Academy athlete spotlight, there was just one problem. There were far too many to choose from.

The Grey Ghosts had a jam packed week of athletic accomplishments from individual accomplishments to team accolades.

Westford's girls swimming and diving team repeated as Division 1 champions on Saturday at Springfield College. Jennifer Marrkand led the charge with two individual wins and two relay victories, while Kelly Huber repeated as 100-yard breaststroke champion.

Behind victories over Chelmsford and Boston Latin, the girls hockey team clinched a Dual County League Division I regular season title, while the boys team split a pair of weekend games.

Ashley Craig and Jessica Barry qualified for the New England gymnastics competition scheduled for March 9 with their performances at the state meet. Craig came in fifth on the vault and third on the floor while Barry was fifth on the floor.

Another Westford team also snagged its own league title on Saturday. The cheerleading team won the Dual County League crown in addition to winning the Winter Invitational, hosted by Austin Prep on Sunday.

Both track teams participated in the Division 1 state meet over the weekend, and the highlight came as Nick Scuito ran to a fourth place finish with a new school record in the 1,000 with a time 2:31.83.

Finally on the hardwood, the boys basketball team snuck out an impressive win versus North Andover. The Grey Ghosts topped the Scarlet Knights by a 66-64 margin to improve to 16-4 on the campaign. The girls, meanwhile, beat Wachusett to earn the Grey Ghost Classic championship.
