The Westford Public Schools would like residents to know that if they plan on being chaperones or volunteers with field trips, athletics, or anything else, they will need to get fingerprinted first.

The requirement is part of a new national criminal background check regulation that was signed into law in 2013.

Fingerprinting is only mandatory for school employees, not volunteers; Westford has chosen to extend the requirement to include volunteers. I find this regrettable. It's hard enough to get people to volunteer; now volunteers have to pay $35 out of their own pocket for the privilege? My guess is that this effectively marks the end of parents chaperoning field trips. What a sad state of affairs.

The patch made a mistake in this article. Fingerprinting will now be asked of volunteer assistant coaches and field trip volunteers, NOT of classroom volunteers or field day volunteers, etc. As a mother I can understand why we would want to be very careful who travels around with our kids, particularly since some of these trips are out of state and sometimes even to Europe (high school level).

Thanks for the notes. I guess I should have quoted exactly, word for word, from the notice sent by the schools, which stated: "As a result of the national criminal background check regulation that was signed into law on January 10, 2013, Westford Public Schools will require all field trip chaperones and volunteer athletic coaches to complete the fingerprinting obligation." Lesson learned, limit paraphrasing. :-)
