Westford Property Owner Calls Police Regarding Hunting Stand

The following information was supplied by the Westford Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Nov. 12, 5:45 p.m. – An officer was dispatched to talk to a resident concerned about fraud.

The resident said he owns a business that is brokering a deal with a company in Utah for precious metals and needs approximately $110,000 to “make the deal happen.”

After looking online, the resident was eventually contacted by a lending company in Jamaica, whom he gave his tax information, driver’s license information, and proof of income.

The Jamaican company approved the loan, signed a contract, but then said an insurance policy of $1,950 was needed to be sent by Western Union, with the resident sending that money to the Jamaican company.

Although the Jamaican company told the man that the money would be transferred, earlier that day they declined the loan and said they’d need another $1,950. At this point, the man believed he was being scammed.

The officer on the call attempted to call the Jamaican company’s phone number, which had been disconnected, and check the Jamaican company’s website, which was non-existent. From there the officer advised the resident to contact his bank and monitor his credit.

Nov. 13, 10:45 a.m. – A private property owner near the Acton border left a message with police requesting assistance for an archery stand meant to be placed on conservation land near on his property.

The property owner was concerned as the stand was 40 feet away from a natural trail and within 500 feet of nearest residence.

It was noted that the stand was not properly secured.

Massachusetts Environmental Police investigated the stand and saw it as more than 500 feet away from the nearest house and confirmed it was on conservation land.

The officer on the call checked back the next day and saw the stand still there. A business card left by the Environmental Police had not been touched.

The officer contacted local hunters asking to spread the word that the stand needed to be removed.
