MCC Students Explore Public Service Careers

More than 100 Middlesex Community College students gathered to explore career opportunities available with local, state and federal law-enforcement agencies at a special event, titled “Working for America: Discovering Public Service Careers,” held recently on the Lowell campus.

Sponsored by MCC’s Program on Homeland Security and the Academic, Career & Transfer Center, the panel discussion and networking opportunity featured officers and agents from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Massachusetts State Police, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security offices of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“These types of events significantly increase employment opportunities for our students,” said Terrence B. Downes, Executive Director for MCC’s Program on Homeland Security. “We want to show our students there is a wide range of potential careers at local, state and federal levels available for people with various educational and technical backgrounds,” he added.

Each panelist spoke about their current roles, their career paths, and the various career opportunities available within their respective organizations. Panelists also discussed the benefits of working in public service. At the conclusion of the panel, students were able to speak one-on-one with the panelists to ask general or specific questions about working in various sectors of public service and law enforcement.

"It was great to see so much interest in public service careers from MCC students," said CBP Public Affairs Liaison Sean Smith. "Sharing the podium with partner agencies, in different levels of government, allowed the attendees to see a wide spectrum of options to serve their communities and America."
