The 31st Greater Lowell Walk for Hunger

Think Globally-Act Locally. Support local charities that battle hunger in our local communities Participate in the 31st Annual Greater Lowell Walk for Hunger on Friday, March 29th, 2013.

The 31st Annual Greater Lowell Walk for Hunger is scheduled for Good Friday, March29 beginning 8:00am at St. Mark's Church, 75 Cold Spring Road in Westford. this is an open invitation to all members of the Greater Lowell communities and local schools, organizations and congregations to participate in this tradition of providing funding for several vital charities that battle hunger in our communities. These local outreach programs  and charities are the Alternative House, The House of Hope, The Lowell Transitional Living Center , The Open Pantry of Greater Lowell, The Merrimack Valley Food Bank Mobile Pantry, and the food pantries in Westford and Chelmsford . Our national outreach is through Sharing, Inc. whose mission is to eliminate poverty and hunger, wherever they exist. Each year we have been able to distribute $20,000-$30,000 to assist these local agencines in their mission to feed the hungry We are pleased to continue our affiliation with The Feinstein Foundation who provides matching funds to many organizations in the fight against hunger.  Our mission this year is for our walkers to approach $40,000 in pledged donations

The walk is a 13-mile safe and scenic course consisting of two loops(4.2 & 8.8 miles) to and from St. Mark's Episcopal Church, with the opportunity to walk one or both parts through Westford and Chelmsford. There are convenient stops to rest and mingle with new and old friends. Crossing guards are posted at all street intersections, with first aid services, a PB & J lunch at West Chelmsford United Methodist Church, and van rides back to St. Mark's throughout the day.

The local youth have been a backbone to previous walks raising substanitial funds for these charities. This Community Service opportunity can be listed to complete requriements for the National Honor Society and college applications. As most local  schools have a half day or are off completely, participating in the walk can be an enriching commitment for several friends.
