It's Time For a 3rd party!

Dear Fellow Westford Resident:

Thomas Jefferson is quoted as writing, “An enlightened citizenry is indispensable for the proper functioning of a republic. Self-government is not possible unless the citizens are educated sufficiently to enable them to exercise oversight.”   So if you care about your country, and your civic duty, you are keeping yourself informed.  If you are keeping yourself informed, you are keenly aware of the Kabuki theater on display in Washington D.C as both republicans and democrats cannot agree on a budget and therefore have allowed the government to be “shut down.”  And if you are truly informed, and not just taking sides based upon whatever brand of political Kool Aid is available, you know that BOTH sides are to blame for the insanity that ensues.  At this time in our history, polling has shown that support for a 3rd party is at its highest levels in recent memory.  This is a poll that came out today (10/11/2013) from Gallup: http://www.gallup.com/poll/165392/perceived-need-third-party-reaches-new-high.aspx?utm_source=sitemap&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=syndication&utm_term=perceived-need-third-party-reaches-new-high

But what kind of 3rd party should arise?  When I talk to most people, they want a party that is socially liberal—and not because they particularly support gay marriage, or marijuana legalization, or abortion rights, but because even the most red of conservatives understands that a government powerful enough to control these things, is too powerful and omnipotent for everyone.  So too, many progressives (especially business owners) know from first hand experience that the government taxes and regulates too much, and while they understand the good intentions in giving the power to the government to create social and economic justice, the government is just too bloated and bureaucratic to help the poor, educate the masses, create a level playing field effectively, efficiently and economically.   From what I hear, people want fiscal restraint and a return to free market principles but a social agenda that allows people to choose the manner by which they live their lives.  The funny thing is, this 3rd choice already exists and it is the 3rd largest party in the country right now as I write this letter.

We are the Libertarian Party.  We offer freedom of choice matched with personal responsibility.  We believe that a government so large it can promise you everything is a government so large it can take everything away.  All you have to do is look at how Mayor Bloomberg has governed New York City to see how a government can create a nanny state that insults progressives and conservatives alike.  And all you have to do is listen to the things that come out of republicans’ mouths to understand that if given power again, they would follow an agenda of social regression and Empire building.  If you are sick of both parties, I ask you to look at the Libertarian platform.  http://www.lp.org/  You may have to brush up some economic terms like, “quantitative easing,” and the differences between “Keynesian economics and Austrian economics,” maybe even read a little Locke and Ayn Rand, but in the end I’m confident you’ll find The Libertarian Party a great fit for your independent views.

The reason why I am talking to you, is because we just don’t need you at the federal level to stop the US from bombing Syria, or to demand sane fiscal budgeting, we need you at the local level here in town to demand that the town becomes as lean and efficient as possible while getting the local government out of our marriages, lives and personal choices.  So if you are a Republican and want to break away from the party of Lidsney Graham, John McCain, Dick Cheney, et. al. and if you’re a Democrat and you want to break away from the party of Charlie Rangel, Nancy Pelosi, Michael Weiner, et. al. then consider the Libertarian Party.  If you like what you see, we need you.  Go to town hall at your earliest convenience and change your party affiliation to Libertarian, or you can do so online here: http://www.westfordma.gov/Pages/onlineservices/westfordma_news/067E6815-011F7A25

Thank you for your time,

Steve Sadowski
