GALVIN SUPPORTS BEACON HILL WATCHDOG GROUP

Dennis J. Galvin, Vice Chair of the Westford Planning Board and Republican candidate for state representative in the Second Middlesex District, threw his support behind a group of state lawmakers calling for better oversight of state spending. On July 17, Galvin joined state representatives, Shaunna O'Connell (R-Taunton), Jim Lyons (R-Andover), Marc Lombardo (R-Billerica), Jeff Diehl (R- Plymouth) and other state representatives and candidates on the statehouse steps to call for better oversight of state spending and a repeal of the gas tax indexing provision, which ties increases in the gas tax to inflation.

“In light of the revelations emanating from the O’Brien trial in Federal court, regarding corruption in the Probation Department, it is reasonable to suspect, that budget padding could be more widespread than previously thought,” Galvin stated. “Our state budget has grown by $8 billion in just the past six years -- an astronomical increase. In the wake of the revelations surrounding the actions of House Speaker Robert DeLeo, where he allegedly traded budget increases for patronage positions, and House practices such as consolidated budget amendments, no one on the outside can really be sure what is going on. This is why it is absolutely essential that our elected representatives consistently raise concerns about expenditures and challenge those that appear questionable. This is the only protection the average taxpayer has. I would like to be a part of this effort.”

Galvin criticized his opponent, incumbent James Arciero, for remaining silent on this situation. Galvin commented, “Mr. Arciero is a strong supporter of Mr. DeLeo and has allowed his loyalties to the Speaker to take precedence over his duty to guard the public trust. None of the actions we have seen in the Probation scandal could have occurred if he and the other members of the majority party stood together and condemned them, but they didn’t do this. This was a monumental failure in my judgment.”
