On this Saturday, we will be offering a free
orientation on the threat of invasive species like Mile-a-minute vine in
Westford. After the orientation attendees will have the opportunity to
join our volunteers in gathering these vines and removing them from the
area.
Thanks to some very observant residents, the presence
of these vines in Westford was discovered in two places about two years
ago. They grow so fast that a new vine can reach the top of a large
tree in one Summer. Furthermore a single vine will produce a large
number of seeds, which then get spread by wind, birds, deer and streams.
The MaM vines are particularly threatening because they are near
Tadmuck Brook and an unnamed brook which both flow into the main stem of
Stony Brook (which eventually flows into the Merrimack River).
We recommend long sleeve shirts, pants and garden gloves.
