Tocci Building Companies Honored for Best Renovation/Restoration Project by ENR New England

Tocci Building Companies, (Tocci) a Boston-area construction manager and recognized leader in virtual design and construction solutions, proudly announces that Abbot Mill in Westford, MA was recognized by Engineering News-Record (ENR) New England for the Best Renovation/Restoration Project. On behalf of Yule Development Company Inc. and Ganek Architects Inc., Tocci strategically oversaw and managed the renovation and implementation of sustainable practices to the Victorian building.

Completed in September 2012, the restoration of Abbot Mill transformed the historic complex into unique loft-style residences that maintain the historic integrity of the structure and incorporate several sustainable practices and features. Tocci worked with Yule Development Company, Inc. and Ganek Architects, Inc. to renovate the 150-year-old fabric mill into 131 residential units covering 239,000 square feet. Most notably, the new project features several sustainable additions, including sealing and insulation in each unit and a 40,000 square foot array of solar panels on the roof that produce 331 KW of non-carbon energy.

“Tocci’s historical renovation and construction expertise were fundamental to this project,” said Chris Yule, President of Yule Development. “Our main objective was to preserve the historical context of the building while creating an energy efficient, modern living environment that complements today’s aesthetics. Tocci’s flexibility and advanced array of services were instrumental in achieving that goal.”

Abbot Mill was among 15 other projects recognized as winners in the ENR Best Projects Competition, but was one of only four others to be awarded the high honor of Best Project in their respective categories. As a result, Abbot Mill will advance to ENR’s national competition to be considered for a Best of the Best national award.  Recently, the American General Contractors Build New England Awards Program recognized Abbot Mill with the Honor Award. Tocci was also awarded Gold for Best Remodeling/Restoration: Best multi- or Single-Family Re-Use or Conversion at the 2013 PRISM Awards this fall. Lastly, Abbot Mill was also honored with the Building Project of the Year in the Renovation/Modernization Project Over $20 Million category by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) in May 2013.

“We are honored to be considered a ‘Best Project’ of New England by ENR,” commented Bud LaRosa, Chief Business Performance Officer of Tocci. “This award is a tribute to each individual component of the construction team as well as to the spirit of collaboration that enabled the team to effectively implement the project’s design changes. We look forward to watching the project as it progresses in ENR’s national competition.”

The ENR New England Best Projects competition honors top projects in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont in nine different categories. ENR New England will also honor one project as a Best Overall Project for New England.
