Out With The Old And In With The New (Cupcake Store)

Melissa Guillemette hopes to fill the hole made by the departure of Sugar Cupcake Shoppe by expanding her previously home-based business.

Driving down 110 over the past few weeks, one can be forgiven if the absence of Sugar Cupcake Shoppe might not be immediately noticeable to those not paying attention. Or at least, that’s what Melissa Guillemette has found.

That’s because Guillemette has taken over where Sugar’s Kate Kelly has left off at the little nook between Nixon and South Chelmsford roads on Route 110 with another cupcake store, bringing a storefront to what was before her home-based Sweetpea’s Bakery.

“It’s a great opportunity, I had people stopping by all the time and I couldn’t accommodate that,” she says. “So now with a storefront, people can stop by and grab a cake whenever they’re in the mood.”

Replacing one cupcake store with another cupcake store can certainly have its advantages in terms of customer recognition, but the two bakers have indicated entirely different needs.

For Kelly, the move to Chelmsford came in large part because of a lack of a kitchen at what is now the new Sweetpea’s location. For Guillemette, that only means she can leave the mess at home.

And while Guillemette believes transporting larger cakes may become a problem, for the most part the location has everything she needs from the “Wedding Central” aspect of the building now holding a photographer, florist and bakery to what she sees as the coziness of the location.

“It’s a very ma and pa kind of place, I don’t want my business to grow so large that people don’t know who I am,” she said.

And while many may be put off by the increases in traffic from Cornerstone Square just down the street, for this business owner, that increased traffic is a bonus.

“The more people that go down 110, the more will see my sign and know I’m here. I don’t think that’s bad at all,” she said.

Coming soon, Guillemette hopes to expand into non-alcoholic drinks and put out patio seating.

Congratulations Melissa! Best wishes for more success. I never had a chance to try those ginger snap cookies I bought at the fair because everyone in the house ate them in a minute. "The best ginger cookie I've ever eaten," was my daughter's comment. Hope you have them at the store so I can get more! :)

I've already bought 3 birthday cakes from her since Dec 6th 2012! The best I've ever had- MANY organic ingredients too and has been able to accommodate 24hr in advance orders. I like her policies better than her predecessor- never got to try the previous shop's goods but based on reviews this shop sounded better quality cupcakes (& slightly better priced too!)

Just a quick note to add that since opening our store location on December 1st, Sweetpeas Bakery has added several hot beverages to our menu including coffee (fresh ground and brewed to order), a variety of quality teas, hot cider & hot chocolate. Although we have been frequently labeled a "cupcake shop", our menu certainly incorporates much more than just cupcakes. Sweetpeas Bakery offers a variety of cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and other sweets on a daily basis as well as accepting custom cake orders for occasions ranging from birthdays to weddings. All of our products are baked with organic and natural ingredients including organic sugar, organic milk, organic eggs and only unbleached flours. We are extremely proud to offer gluten free, dairy free, nut free and soy free options in addition. Sweetpeas Bakery is currently working towards offering indoor seating and also a small scale breakfast/pastry menu in the near future. www.sweetpeasbakery.com | (978) 489-9001 PS- If our "OPEN" sign is turned on we are definitely open so come on in and say hello! Our windows are tinted rather dark so the sun doesn't melt our cupcake icing during the day and many people mistakenly think that we are closed because it looks dark inside! We assure you, we're open! :-)
