Back to School Grocery Guide #1: Lunchables, Fruit2O, and PB Sandwiches

Here's our first entry in our back-to-school grocery guides all this month.

School is almost back in session here in Westford, and all this month we're using the grocery hunt to take a look at some items local Patch users have asked us to take a look at.

For folks looking for these items in local stores, Lunchables are generally in fridge cases near the bacon, peanut butter and bread are almost always in the same aisle and Fruit2O is usually, but not always, near the water.

All Fruit2O prices were for six packs of 16 ounce bottles. All other weights are noted.

Prices were taken on Aug. 14, prices may change without notice and may not necessarily reflect taxes and fees not indicated on labeling.

Part 1 of 2: To each his own... (We are all busy, & I buy things like this on occasion, but I would truly worry about a child that, out of "necessity", ate this multiple days a week.) Here are ingredients copied from the Peapod web site data base for Lunchables. I randomly chose one with "water", ham, cheese, crackers & cookies: OK I tried to paste the ingredients list, but there were 971 characters too many! So, here is a small selection: Aspartame (Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine) and Acesulfame Potassium (Sweeteners), Salt, Red 40, Artificial Flavor, Prepared Cheese Product, Milk Protein Concentrate, Oleoresin, Ham - Water Added - Chopped and Formed, Modified Corn Starch, Sodium Lactate, Sodium Phosphates, Sugar, Sodium Diacetate, Sodium Ascorbate, Sodium Nitrite, Artificial Flavor, Sugar, Dextrose, Palm Oil, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sugar, Dextrose, Caramel Color, Artificial Flavor, Soybean Oil, Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil, Sorbitol, Aspartame (Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine), Artificial Flavor, Sucralose, Red 40, Blue1

Part 2 of 2 I would expect the water to contain 1 ingredient - namely, water - the ham to contain 2 - pork & salt - the cheese to contain three - milk, rennet & enzymes - & the cookies to have sugar listed twice - once in the batter and once in the chocolate chips - not 5 times. I am not judging; I am educating those that do not have time to read FORTY NINE lines of ingredients on just a few of the less desirable ones, and on how big corporations care so little for our children's long term health if they can make money on convenience! I truly hope this information is helpful to at least one person out there. BTW: Where's the vegetable? Not even a baby carrot in site.

Food choices like these are why the school nurses now measure and weight our kids to tell us how fat they are.

Hi "bettilou," We got a few other options from last week, but we're always looking for more if you have ideas! We'll be doing this for the next few weeks, somewhere between two and four weeks depending on how many items we get.

A great option to the peanut butter sandwiches is sunbutter. It is safe to be around anyone with nut allergies and is delicious! It can be found right next to the peanut butter at Market Basket.
