More Ways to Reduce Your Junk Mail (And Stress)

With a little extra effort, you can get your mailbox back -- and be more environmentally conscious.

Did you do your best to take back your mailbox by following all the tips in ?

Still have too much junk mail? Here are a few more ways to reduce your stress -- and be more environmentally conscious.

  • Phone books: You can opt out of receiving phone books. The major ones in this area are Yellow Book and SuperMedia.
  • Globe Direct: This is the "newspaper" with circulars that arrives in my mailbox on Wednesday. You can cancel delivery by calling 508-871-1910 and leaving your mailing address and/or by e-mailing gddelivery@globe.com and doing the same. Try both.
  • Clipper Magazine: Coupons are available to print online. To opt out of the magazine, click here.

Any company you do business with has the right to send you mail unless you specifically ask them not to. Some of the biggest sources are colleges you attended and  financial institutions which hold your investments. I suggest saving junk mail. When you have some time, go through the pile and figure out how to eliminate it.

Look for an offer to “receive this electronically” or go to their website and search for an “opt out” option. If you can’t find these options, email or call customer support.  Use these magic words:

“Please remove my name from distribution for X and any other offers, promotions, or 3rd party and affiliates marketing.  Also please do not rent, sell, or trade my name or address.”

Explain to the customer service representative that you are trying to reduce your junk mail. Ask if there is anything you can receive electronically or eliminate.  While doing this, one very helpful customer service representative told me that if my credit card number ever changes, for whatever reason, I will need to make my requests again.

There are also companies that will reduce your junk mail for you. For $41 , 41pounds.org promises to reduce your junk mail by 80 – 95%. One-third of this fee is donated to an environmental organization. Catalog Choice makes it easy to opt out of catalogs. It might take a little longer than contacting the company personally, but it is very easy.
