Patch has partnered with GoFundMe and is highlighting worthy campaigns in our local communities including Miles for Matthew, an effort to raise $35,000 for a van for Matthew Davidopoulos, a Westford boy diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Type 1 in 2009.
Matthew Davidopoulos was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Type 1 in 2009; he was 8 months old. Doctors didn't believe, with this diagnosis, that Matt would live to see his second birthday. For the family it was devastating. However, he continues to defy the odds and will turn five this spring. It is a blessing that we have him here and he can experience life, one day at a time. Although Matt cannot walk or sit up on his own, he is a very bright, humorous and never, ever stops talking. Since age two-and-a-half, Matt's power wheelchair has opened up a whole new and improved world for him that is very full. The challenge the family currently faces is getting him safely to all activities, therapies and appointments. He gets around in a power wheelchair and is accompanied by a great deal of medical equipment whenever he leaves home. He needs to travel in his wheelchair so he can be properly supported at all times. As a community, we are trying to fund raise for a full size van to accommodate Matt's chair, his equipment and in the near future a service dog. (not to mention his brother) Matthew enjoys so many activities: the farmer's market, the Millennium Preschool, Merrimack College Men's Lacrosse games and the accessible playground here in Westford (Ronan McElligott Memorial Park). Matt is constantly invited to birthday parties and play dates and the family wants to make sure he can continue to experience everything life has to offer with ease, comfort and safety. He really wants to play power soccer and see his first Red Sox game and we want to be able to do that for him. There will be a St. Patrick's Day themed fundraiser March 8 from 7 pm-Midnight (more details to follow) at the VFW in Westford or you can donate, at your convenience, through Gofundme. Thank you for all of your time, consideration and support. Matthew would not be here without all of your thoughts, help and prayers through the last 4 1/2 years.
