Westford 8th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Team Wins Playoffs

The Westford 8th grade girls travel basketball Grey team won their playoffs to capture the 2014 River Valley League C Division championship this weekend.  The team beat Peabody, then Wilmington to face Malden in the finals.  In the beginning, Westford could not catch a break and Malden went up 16-0, but then Westford mounted a furious comeback to win 50-48.

In the championship game, contributions were made across the board.  Erika Waterhouse had four three-pointers to get the rally started.  Carina Stafstrom had eleven rebounds and forced many jump balls and turnovers.  Kate Walker and Olivia Hillman made key baskets.  Emily Doolin was stifling on defense, matched up against Malden's best player.  Makena Waterhouse and Kayleigh Semeter each had three steals.  Leah Donovan had four blocks, anchoring the defense.  Ally Breen had several assists and four rebounds from the PG position.  Erica Maclure was fearless driving to the basket, and made key free throws down the stretch.  In the end, it was the relentless pace on offense and defense and a complete team effort that brought home the victory.

The year started with a tournament championship highlighted by a comeback win vs. Lowell back in October.  They then played a very challenging B division regular season schedule.  That paid off in the final playoffs, as the team showed tremendous resilience, toughness, and desire to close it out.
