WA Softball 2-0 with Win over Bedford
The WA softball team won its second game with a commanding 11-6 victory over Bedford on the road on Wednesday. The ghosts came out strong loading the bases in the first inning with the top of the order Morgan Ross (2R, 1H, 1RBI) leading off with a single, and Kayla Murphy (4R, 3H), and Emily Chateauneuf (IH, 4 RBI) all reaching first. Ross scored on a passed ball and Alexa Sullivan (1H, 3RBI) knocked in Murphy. Starting pitcher Deanna Johnston (2H, 2RBI) singled to score Chateauneuf and catcher Caroline Baggeroer doubled before the inning ended. Bedford responded in the bottom of the first with 3 runs scored to tie up the game. In the second inning, Westford was able to put 3 more runs on the board with a couple of runners reaching on fielding errors and single from Murphy. Chateauneuf hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to center to score Marie McGourty, and Sullivan singled to put two more across the plate. The ghosts increased the lead by two runs in the fourth with singles from Murphy, Meagan Scannell, and Johnston. Bedford threatened to come back in the bottom of the fourth with 3 runs across the plate. Westford had a huge inning in the fifth with a homerun blast from Chateauneuf that scored three more runs. Westford Coach Peter Burr commented, “We have a very strong group of players this year. Everyone up and down the line-up is contributing to the goals of the team. The team is really coming together.” Johnston started in the circle for 3.6 innings giving up 7 hits, 6 runs and striking out 3, for the win. Christie Raymond came in for relief giving up 2 hits and no runs.
