GDRHS Chamber Choir Benefit with Livingston Taylor
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor will take the stage at Devens Common Center to benefit The Groton-Dunstable Regional High School Chamber Choir as they raise funds for their upcoming trip to the London Olympics. The choir will open the show, and may also perform a number or two with Taylor. The event is sponsored by Devens Common Center, Squadron Capitol, Riverbend and Company, Filho’s Cucina, and Community Chiropractic.
Tickets are on sale now at www.gdchamber2012.com, or locally at Community Chiropractic, The Blackbird Café, Main Street Café, and Filho’s Cucina, all in Groton. Tickets will also be sold at the door, based on availability the night of the show. Tickets are $30.00 in advance, $40.00 at the door, or $75 in advance for VIP seating and a champagne reception with Taylor. Tables of 8 tickets are available in advance for $200 or $550 for VIP seating and reception. The show begins at 7 pm, and is preceded by a silent auction at 6:30. A cash bar will be available. Devens Common Center is located at 31 Andrews Parkway, Devens, MA. For more information, visit www.gdchamber2012.com.
“We are so excited to bring such a wonderful, acclaimed artist to our area,” said Dr. Pam Jarboe, the event’s organizer and mom to Jackson, 17, a chamber choir member. “Livingston Taylor puts on such an engaging, intimate performance, and the kids are thrilled for the opportunity to share the stage with an artist of his caliber. The event will both make a huge contribution to the fundraising effort, and give the kids a milestone experience they’ll remember forever.”
Multiple fundraisers are underway to raise $132,510 for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, for which these "vocal athletes" are rehearsing 90 minutes each day, five days a week. So far, the group has raised $90,000, with $40,000 to be raised by the end of May. Gold Sponsor Devens Common Center generously donated their ballroom for the upcoming benefit concert, which could raise up to $20,000 toward costs for the student trip.
For the past three years, the chamber choir at Groton-Dunstable Regional High School has competed at the highest level in music competitions in New York and Philadelphia, sweeping first place in each category despite being upgraded to a bigger division each year. As a result of this success, the 30-member choir was selected one of five choirs to represent the USA in the London Summer Olympics.
According to the ensemble’s director, Timothy Savoy, of Londonderry, N.H., the chamber choir is the only one from the Northeast invited to participate.
“The students will perform at three events in Olympic Park, four side venues, and four additional locations around London from Aug. 1 to 9.” Savoy said. The chamber choir travels regionally for competitions, but this will be its first trip overseas. “The kids have put in a lot of hard work and dedication to get to this position,’’ Savoy said. “I’m so proud of them.’’
