Former Westford Rep Endorses Scott Brown

Democrat Geoff Hall served Westford in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1991 to 2009 and served with Scott Brown for several years, which was one of the key reasons why Brown picked up Hall's endorsement at Kimball Farm on Thursday.

The race between incumbent Republican Scott Brown and expected Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren came to Westford on Thursday as former Democratic Geoff Hall announced his endorsement for Brown outside of Kimball Farm in an impromptu press conference. Hall, a life-long Democrat who served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1991 to 2009, knew Brown when he represented Wrentham in the House and developed a respect for the eventual state and U.S. Senator. “The issues that were important to me were important to him were important to him, (such as) economic issues, but his ability to reach across the aisle and work with folks across the aisle were the important things,” said Hall. “When Scott was elected to the (…

Q&A With Westford's Next School Committee Member:Terence Ryan

Westford Patch sat down with the candidate to talk about issues ranging from the School Department's fiscal future to the state of local politics as a whole.

For those driving around Westford's main roads, it might be difficult to discern that there's actually an election coming up on May 1 due to the fact that there are almost no signs out on lawns. Don't tell that to Terence Ryan though. A newcomer to Westford politics, he's the third candidate for three slots for the School Committee election on Tuesday and he's been making his name visible across town. On the Friday before the election, Westford Patch sat down with what, excluding an unprecedented write-in campaign, will be the next member of the Westford School Committee for a one-on-one interview....   Westford Patch: You've already technically won... Why all the signs? Terence Ryan: I want to get my name out there. There are people who …

Sarah, Thank you for the comments. I could not attend the meeting last night, but I understand that it was well attended by representatives of the town and school system. As a new member of the School Committee, I look forward to working with the Superintendent and Mr. Antonelli to understand the issues and provide any help I can. Thanks again, Terry   more ›

A few more corrections/clarifications MacQuarrie Lane, not McCory, Jim Geraghty Alex Cannella Bill Harman at 8 p.m., the FinComm position was 1 in support, 4 in opposition, 1 abstaining Eric Kintner John Cunningham of Butternut Road, not John Roberts of Cunningham Road. Again, we apologize. It's definitely tough to do these on the fly.   more ›

2012 Town Meeting Preview Part 4: The Other Warrant Articles

Today we look at everything on the warrant we haven't talked about yet.

It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for part four of our five part series on the 2012 Annual Town Meeting, being held this Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Abbot School gymnasium. Today we take a look and some bylaw amendments on the warrant and the rest of the items we haven’t touched upon yet. Article 29: As touched upon in part one, this article would amend the town bylaws to allow more latitude to the Selectmen regarding legal affairs such as accepting settlements in litigation. In a report to the entire board, Selectman Valerie Wormell noted that after looking at several other towns in the state, the amount the town of Westford could accept in legal settlements without going to the voters was drastically lower than other towns, with one…

@JR - not sure why you thought the asphalt plant wasn't coming to Westford. The planning board did vote it down, but the proponents took it to land court and the Town of Westford is currently defending the case. Though, with the kind of money the proponent was throwing around during the hearings, why wouldn't they throw just as much money (if not more) toward an enticing settlement? If you're …   more ›

2012 Town Meeting Preview Part 3: Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

There are several warrant articles on this Saturday's Town Meeting warrant having to do with the long contested nature path in the southeastern part of town. What happens could affect Acton and Chelmsford along with Westford.

Today, part three of our five part series on this Saturday’s Westford Town Meeting looks at the five warrant articles having to do with the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. Articles 14 and 15: These two articles are identical, and Article 14, which was brought forth by the Selectmen, is likely going to be dismissed so there are not duplicate votes on the same issue. Article 15, which came from a citizens’ petition, asks the town to appropriate a sum of $5,000 for surveying and technical work to develop parking inside Westford near the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. The view of supporters is that every other trail in town has parking facilities, and the demand for parking along the Bruce Freeman Trail has caused issues for those looking to access the…

Details of the Teacher Contract Negotiations Released by the School Committee

The School Committee has released details of the negotiation process between themselves and the Westford Education Association.

The following comes from the Westford School Committee -- The School Committee has repeatedly been asked to supply the public with details of our negotiations with the teachers’ union.  During the course of formal negotiations the sharing of negotiation details with the public about the offers was prohibited.  After formal negotiations ended, the Committee accepted the advice of the State mediator not to disclose the details of the offers over the course of the mediation with the WEA as the best process to reach an agreement.  On February 28, 2012, an Agreement on the terms of a successor contract was reached with the negotiating team authorized to represent the teachers.  This agreement was rejected by the union members at a …

Thomas Aquinas: Lowell among the top 10 high teacher salary systems. Lowell manages top 10 teacher compensation & Westford can't even maintain bottom 30%? Higher salary in Lowell, a 75/25 insurance split (60/40 here) Lowell is a poverty stricken failure, I grew up there, & Westford can't compete. Why? It's not because of ur teachers. No one seems 2 remember they've made concessions previously, …   more ›
