Our latest Whiz Kid is ten year old Jessica Leong, aquatic superstar and newly minted rookie swimming instructor.
Living in Westford, Leong has been a major asset in recent years swimming for the DCF League team at the Groton Country Club, where she is now training to use her abilities in the pool to help younger children learn how to swim.
“Since I like to swim, I thought I would teach other people to swim,” said Leong.
The young aquatic phenom, who says her favorite event is the breaststroke, is the latest in a long line of young swimmers on the country club team who have grown to help others learn to swim and protect those who don’t.
“They all grow up through the swim team and become lifeguards and swim instructors,” says Groton Country Club aquatics director Carol Wright. “She’s been wonderful, she’s been great with the younger kids helping them get used to the water and playing with them and getting them in.”
It seems like just yesterday since Wright taught Leong and her sisters to swim, but she’s grown as a swimmer over the years and Wright believes that Leong has big things in store for her swimming future.
“She’s phenomenal, she’s always gotten first place in everything,” Wright said. “She’ll absolutely be on the (Grey Ghosts) someday.
