Woman Upset With Nine-Year-Old Staring at Her Inside Five Guys

The following information was supplied by the Westford Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Feb. 22, 2:44 p.m. - Two women were involved in a partial verbal altercation outside of Five Guys. One, a mother, said she went up to get her food inside of the restaurant and when she came back the other woman was upset that the mother's nine-year-old daughter was staring at her.

The mother asked the other woman for understanding, given that the girl was only nine years old and apologized. Eventually she left and asked firefighters in the parking lot to call the police due to the other woman not letting the issue go.

By the time officers reached the scene, the other woman entered another nearby store, and walked away when police tried to ask for her name, only stating that the child was rude before leaving.

The officer complimented the mother in trying to deescalate the confrontation.

Feb. 28, 11:42 p.m. - David Asselin, 28, of 22 Weed St. in Lowell was arrested on alleged possession of class B drugs.

Mar. 1, 4:58 a.m. - William Lumsden, 32, of 24 Fitz St. in Lawrence was arrested for alleged operation of a motor vehicle while uninsured, forged registry of motor vehicle documents, operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and operating a motor vehicle without an inspection sticker.

Seriously, she called a 9-yr-old rude for staring? What does that make her for complaining about where a 9 year old looks? My son has autism, it's people like this woman who freak out over teeny behavior anomalies that are going to make life that much harder for him. Relax, lady. She's not going to zap you with her 9 y.o. laser vision.

oh I hope I never came across as rude, I used to stare off into space and sometimes it was while another person was in my line of vison. Not staring at anything in particular just spacing out!

In my experience Westford police don't always report information correctly. I was sitting in 5-guys that day as a black woman I wonder if the Westford police would have reported it correctly if the woman wasn't black. The child was not staring- she was being rude, eavesdropping, and had no manners which is what the woman complaint to the mom about.

The strangled syntax in this comment is making me weep.

What are you trying to say here? You were sitting in Five Guys as a black woman? The woman who complained was black? Both you and the woman who complained were black?

If you're alleging some kind of a quasi-racial context for this incident, at least take the time to get the story straight!

children today are rude and very misbehaved. Not so when I was young or when my children were young. Today;'s parents just dont have time to make children behave or be respectful to others. What a shame children have become rude, unsensitive, misbehaved BRATS. I see it all the time in stores, on the streets, and restaurants. Parents just stand there like this is permissable WOW!!

Evelyn, the last thing anyone should call a child is a "rude, unsensitive, misbehaved BRAT." Children grow up learning new things and being explorative every day. I'm sure this child was just looking at the woman because the woman was wearing something that appealed to the child or something like that. Growing up, I always used to stare at cars or people wearing funky clothing. This doesn't mean that I was a "rude, unsensitive, misbehaved BRAT." It just means I was being curious, like any other innocent child. Parents let their children explore new things. Even in this situation, the parent didn't know the child was staring. If you truly believe that kids have become "rude, unsensitive, misbehaved BRATS," then go up to the next little 9-year-old girl you see, and verbally say it to her. That wouldn't be very nice, would it? The child would be in tears. Thus, I *respectfully* disagree with your words, and I believe that children are beautifully curious. If you wouldn't say it to the person you're talking about, then you shouldn't post it on the internet. Children have absolutely not become "rude, unsensitive, misbehaved BRATS." Life is a learning process, and the curious nature in children shan't be negated. They are being curious for the sake of learning what new things are like. Therefore, I respectfully disagree with your statement, Evelyn.
