Gourmet cupcake fans in Westford got a treat last Thursday, no pun intended.

Today marks the one week anniversary of the Sugar Cupcake Shoppe, home to an assortment of unique cupcakes, pastries conveniently located between Chili’s and Nashoba Valley Technical High School.

The new business is the brainchild of Westford Academy graduate and current Chelmsford resident Kate Kelly, a recent Arizona resident returning home for family issues.

While Kelly always enjoyed baking, had no idea she would one day be the owner of a pastry shop growing up in Westford. However, her time in Arizona introduced her to the world of culinary arts, dealing with all facets of food from waiting tables to catering for hotels and country clubs.

But above all, she fell in love with the simple beauty of the cupcake.

“Cupcakes are so specialized, you can decorate them however, I love their uniqueness,” she said.

After moving back to the area, Kelly got a part time job with the British Beer Company just down the street, but the fact that Westford seemed to lack an assortment of gourmet eateries comparable to the level of Arizona and the fact that a room was open for rent in the same building as Floral Arts Florist brought an opportunity that she wasn’t expecting beforehand.

“Everything moved really fast. I was planning on doing something, originally I was thinking of doing catering,” she said. “But my dream was starting a bakery, so I decided to go with that.”

Kelly creates an array of cupcakes at a remote bakery in Chelmsford ranging from the traditional vanilla and chocolate to the eclectic tastes of mocha and banana cupcakes, in addition to customized cakes, soda and other items.

It may be too soon to tell what the future holds for the tiny cupcake store on Littleton Road, but given the fact that business more than doubled from opening day by the end of the first weekend and the fact that as of Wednesday night, Sugar Cupcake’s Facebook page already had 70 fans, one could believe that this might be the beginning of delicious things to come.

More information on the Sugar Cupcake Shoppe is available on their website.

A local gluten-free bakery would be nice, too. :)

Wow, not what people said when I brought them to a group of people. People were amazed by the flavors... maybe you should try another kind. We were all taste-testing each other's and we all just loved them!!!!

I also had a very underwhelming experience with these cupcakes. Expected a high-end baked good but got something, while not bad, was nothing beyond mediocre. Perhaps it was just a bad day at the bakery.

I agree Marshall. I expected more of a DC Cupcakes or Cupcake Charlies experience and was left very disappointed. I think the potential is there but lacking a generous topping of frosting and the size of the cupcakes could be larger. My children went and bought me a dozen for Valentines Day and they seemed smaller than usual and the frosting was very skimpy. For the price they paid, I was very disappointed.

My husband and I have known Katie for a long time, as she used to live on our street. We went in to say HI, got a dozen cupcakes and everyone that had one was just blown away by the flavors, the variety and the amazing talent Katie has in creating these wonderful cupcakes. I will follow her to Chelmsford for more of these delicious treats and wish her and her family all the best, always!
