Westford Loses John Shine, Flew on Longest B-24 Mission in WWII
John G. Shine was 89 years old.
Westford resident John G. Shine, a radio operator who flew on the longest B-24 mission in World War II, died this week. He was 89.
Shine served on a B-24 Liberator in the South Pacific during the war, according to his obituary.
He flew more than 300 combat hours, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and a Presidential Citation.
He was aboard a B-24 when it flew more than 16 hours on a bombing run from Northern Australia to Balikpapan, Borneo -- recognized as the longest B-24 flight.
Shine was born in Somerville on Nov. 22, 1922 and graduated from the city's high school. He signed up for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942.
Visiting hours will be held at the Healy Funeral Home in Westford today from 2-5 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held at Westford's St. Catherine's Church Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westford.
