Westford Girls Raise The Commissioners Cup

It was Westford versus Westford in a contest and season the winning coach won't soon forget.

As the U.S Women’s National Team competes this week for glory at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany, Westford can also hail its own female soccer heroes.

The Westford Youth Soccer League girls’ U10 Division 3 team, affectionately known by fans as the Grey Ghosts, took home the coveted title of champion in the Middlesex Youth Soccer League’s Commissioner’s Cup tournament last month.

“My star forward’s friend played goalie on the other team,” said Grey Ghosts head coach Adam Jarnagin. “So yes, there was something of a friend versus friend rivalry in that game.”

Even before the match commenced, Jarnagin knew that this was a moment that would stand out in his eight years of coaching youth soccer.

“I’m not sure how often two Westford teams are able to meet in the finals, so what the girls experienced was unique and will likely be something they remember for a long time,” he said.

The Grey Ghosts pulled off three victories in the tournament to cap off a grueling 6-1-3 regular season, and Jarnagin believes that the girls will be coming back to attempt a repeat next year, although there are still several months before players will be assigned to their 2012 teams.

While he hopes to see them all next year, the Ghosts effort this year will leave a hard act to follow.

“Let me put it this way, I didn’t want to see this season come to an end,” said Jarnagin.
