A serious accident involving a motorcycle and a minivan occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Groton and Oak Hill Road in Westford.

The accident marked the second at that intersection and the third involving Oak Hill Road in less than a month.

According to eyewitness reports, the motorcycle came to rest on its side in front of the Rapid Refill and Lowell Five Bank, while minivan parked at the entrance of Philbrick's Motorsports next to Rapid Refill.

Damage to the minivan was focused on the driver's side of the vehicle, with significant damage to the windows, two of which were gone, and the doors, which appeared to be caved in.

The motorcycle also suffered damage.

On the scene were four marked Westford Police cruisers, two unmarked police vehicles, a State Police Collision Analysis vehicle, several Westford officers, and State Police collision investigators.

Officers on scene were not able to share any details of the accident, or the condition of the people involved.

Following the accident, police closed off Groton Road, diverting traffic from Oak Hill Road through the Lowell Five parking lot.

Despite the crashes, it remains unlikely that a stoplight will be placed at the intersection at any time in the near future.

I am so sorry for everyone's loss. I met Herb for the first time on Sunday. He made me laugh so hard with his stories. I was amazed at how hard he and Zeke (Paul Joy) worked together relentlessly to get a fellow biker's bike running that day. Herb refused to "leave anyone behind". My prayers go out to all family and friends. I was blessed to have met such a gentle man.

So sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure to work with herb for about 5 years at the Carlisle dpw . Herb was definitely one of a kind. super nice guy would do just about anything for anyone . After he retired from the dpw he would still swing thru just to say hello and to see how everyone was doing and to swing thru the transfer station to see if he could find a little treasure he always came out with something weather he needed it or not Haha . I am saddened to know that herb will not be swinging thru again its a sad day for many. You will be missed herb RIP your friend Brendan. Carlisle dpw

I am a friend of your Grandson Michael. I was so heartbroken to hear of your death. Apparently you were a fantastic grandfather & person. God needed another "Special Angel" - I am glad Michael had the time with you that he did. Wish it had been longer. May you R.I.P. & watch over Michael & keep him safe for the rest of his life.
