Non-Toxic Cleaner, with Help from Westford GNC

Rid your home of harmful chemicals with this simple, cheap recipe.

Ever see those warning labels on conventional cleaning products? That's because many contain harmful chemicals and are not tested before they go on the market.

An easy way to go green and save green is to mix your own cleaning products.

Homemade cleaners can be made from safe, time-tested, and even edible ingredients you probably already have in your house!

This all-purpose cleaner concoction costs less than $1 -- after the initial $1 expense for the spray bottle. Skip the essential oils and you are talking pennies for each bottle. If you choose to reuse an old spray bottle, just make sure you clean it very well.

WARNING: If you have granite counter tops, do not use this. The vinegar can damage them.

All-Purpose Cleaner:

  • Any spray bottle
  • 2 cups tap water
  • 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1 tsp Castile soap (Available at the Westford Market Basket or)
  • Essential oils (optional, available at ) I like 10 drops each: lavender, lemongrass, and lemon.

Add all ingredients to the spray bottle and shake gently.

I use this spray on counters, tables, and sinks. The vinegar smell dissipates quickly. I don’t worry if the kids are eating straight off the table after I’ve used it. In fact, they can help me clean and I don’t worry if they spray it on themselves.

If mixing your own cleaners isn’t for you, there are several safe alternatives on the market.  To learn more about non-toxic cleaners, talk to the representative from Shaklee at the Green Living Fair this Saturday in Westford

If you've never used essential oils, give them a try. They can be used for all sorts of healing remedies as well. Yvonne from Inspired Life Wellness will also be at the fair hosting a workshop titled “Essential Oils for use in Natural Remedies, Prevention and First Aid.”
