Dogs Charge Toward Mother, Daughter on Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

The following information was supplied by the Westford Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following are entries from the Westford Police log for July 11 and 12.

The Westford Police Log is available to the public at the Westford Police station on Main Street, with earlier logs available online at www.westfordma.gov

Additional information is available in certain cases from the Westford Police Records Department for a nominal fee, but not in any case involving an arrest.

Any instances where streets are mentioned without addresses shall be placed on the map as occurring on the first address on that street for geographical convenience unless otherwise stated even though the incident may have happened somewhere else on the street.

Wednesday, July 11

2:15 a.m. – Police investigated a burglar alarm at Westford Academy, but the alarm proved to be false.

Thursday, July 12

12:53 a.m. – A motor vehicle accident was noted on Littleton Road. No injuries were reported.

Follow Up

June 21, 10:53 a.m. – A mother and her 13-year-old girl were walking their dog along the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail when two dogs charged at them from a nearby backyard on Acton Road.

The mother, daughter and their dog were all startled and the mother reported a rope burn from the leash they were using to walk their dog. No other injuries were reported, although the mother indicated that similar incidents occurred in the past according to the police report.

After talking to the mother and daughter, the officer on the call found the owner of the two dogs charging out of the yard. The owner indicated to the officer that he had some medical issues and had left the two dogs in his backyard without a leash.

The owner said he saw the two dogs rushing toward the mother and daughter and ran after the dogs, with the officer informing the owner of the consequences if the dogs attacked anyone as well as information on the town’s leash laws.

The owner understood and said he would keep the dogs on leashes and construct a fence, with the officer returning to the mother and advising her of the conversation with the owner.

June 27, 9:43 p.m. – Police were dispatched to Westford Package Store on Littleton Road after the clerk observed a person possibly purchasing alcohol for minors and leaving the area.

The clerk indicated that the suspected man was driving a black SUV in a parking spot far from the store which was quickly joined by a smaller car.

After entering the store, the man purchased two 40 oz. bottles of beer, which was followed by the clerk asking the man if he was purchasing them for minors. The man said assured the clerk he was not purchasing the alcohol for minors and then approached the smaller car before both cars left the lot together.

The clerk indicated he did not see any exchange between the man and any minors according to police reports.

A search for the man in the area proved negative.

Re:the incident on the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail
I looked into this incident and it seems it happened at NIGHT, when the trail is legally closed, NOT in morning as you reported. All dog owners need to be responsible at all times and these dogs legally should have been leashed. But, let's not give the public misinformation. BTW, when the woman told them to go home they did.

I can double check with the Police Records department on this, the report says this particular incident occurred at 10:53 a.m.

I was not on the scene and I haven't talked to other first hand sources, so I can't independently verify the accuracy of that time.

The BFRT does not close at night, there are no rules in place stating this.

Does this constitute a crime wave?

Thanks for double checking. Also, it was one dog, not dogs.

Stopped in at the Police Station this morning, they're looking into it. I think the confusion here is that this is a different incident than the one you're talking about, the mother said it had happened to her more than once.
