Chemical Treatment for Nab Lake on Thursday

The treatment is targeted toward removing invasive species such as Milfoil and Curly leaf pondweed.

The Westford Board of Health is reporting that portions of Nabnasset Lake will be chemically treated with an aquatic herbicide on Thursday, June 7 with the goal of eradicating non-native plant species such as Curly leaf pondweed and Milfoil.

If left unchecked, the non-native species can kill off native plant species, damaging local animal habitats.

The entire lake will be closed on Thursday, although swimming, fishing and boating may resume on the lake as early as Friday.

Authorities are urging local residents not to use the lake water for drinking or irrigation purposes until June 13, but indicate that any pets accidentally drinking the lake's water are unlikely to be harmed.

The treatment is the responsibility of the Nabnasset Lake Preservation Association in accordance with a License to Apply Chemicals issued by MA DEP and an Order of Conditions from the Westford Conservation Commission.

Aquatic Control Technology Inc. of Sutton has been contracted by the Association to perform the treatment itself.
