Teachers Taking Case to the Corners Once Again
Following breakdowns between the Westford Education Association and the town, Westford's teachers are making their case outside public schools today.
Members of the Westford Education Association stood outside each public school in Westford this morning and plan to do so this afternoon as well as in subsequent events throughout this week.
The move follows a break down in talks between the group and the Westford School Committee over a new contract.
We will have more on the story as it develops.

I thought they were just too busy getting ready and prepared for school (to be standing outside holding up a sign stating the obvious!)? How is this helping their cause? It just tells me that they have idle time on their hands (and holds up traffic since everyone has to stop and read their sign and figure out what they are doing (and why))!
Will they stand together when the staff layoffs are handed out (so they can each receive a COLA and their Step Increases)?

It is time for teachers to be treated like the rest of us "working Americans". They only work 6 hours a day in front of kids and then maybe a few hours at home. The rest of us work 8+ hours per day and many extra hours just to keep our jobs. We also volunteer to be coaches, work the PTO, volunteer at scout leaders, etc. We work with kids outside our regular jobs because it is the right thing to do not because a union contract tells us to do so. Teachers are paid well for the amount of time they actually work (not counting all the vacation, holidays and partial work days.). Westford is not loosing good teachers because of the pay, the Union have not been able to prove that claim. Our kids suffer enough with this "work to rule" ridiculousness. The town is fiscally responsible for not giving into the excessive demands of teachers union. Teachers need to be more concerned about the town as a whole. I do believe that teachers are good people who are controlled by an out-outdated group of extortionists hiding behind the name "union". But of course as I write this I am sure the Union will eventually strike and hurt our children even more. I hope they stand proud when the lay-offs start happening around town!

Thanks for your generic, teachers only work part of the year, response. It's a good thing you can form your own original ideas. I am sure that any teacher would be willing to take your uninformed self in to their lives for a week to share their 6 hour work days. How about after that experiment, you write back if you're still standing. My sense is that your pride would prevent you from even embarking on an experiment to discover whether your beliefs are based in reality. But, I suppose if you already know everything...

If this is how teachers are valued here in westford I cant blame them for taking a do the bare minimum approach with this. I wonder what Peter Stoneybrook thinks of all this turmoil right now?
