Andrew, thank you for the Alert. This is only 1-mile from our house, here in Tyngsboro, so we will keep a watchful eye out for them (and alert the neighbors). We also drive through the area daily!

Does the police really have to be called. Why not just let them be, rather than start chasing them and making matters worse. Most likey they will move. Just a thought.

Luckily, the bears only seem to be in the snowy parts of Westford.

I have to admit that we had seen Bear tracks, a few snowy winters ago, on our property and we weren't alarmed (we have lived throughout the country and we have learned to "live with nature"! But I was surprised that the Tyngsboro Police only reported the latest bear sightings on their Facebook page only (and didn't post anything on their website). Really, I don't Facebook but I do subscribe to the Westford Patch. I am planning on having a little chat about this with Chief Mulligan.

So thank you again Andrew for keeping us informed. I also giggled about the "bears in the wild" stock photo, but I realized that you were scrambling to find a photo and that was what was available. At least you didn't use the "Bear falling onto the trampoline stock video" that Fox News uses everytime they report on a bear sighting.

Jeanne, I don't believe that the bears were chased but that the "reporting party" was just surprised by them and reported them to the Tyngsboro Police (so that the word would get out to the rest of the populace and so that our Animal Officer could be alerted and placed on standby: just in case). I also believe that it is the intent of our Animal Officer to not do anything but give the bears a wide berth and just let them move on!

And no, they don't attack (and eat) small dogs (or cats) either! There were people thinking and reporting this on Facebook, they are herbivores and they were eating people's birdseed and vegetables only.

I just saw two black bears on Tyngsboro Rd in Westford in the woods near the side of the road, around 4 PM. They caused traffic to stop, as people were stopping to look and take pictures.

Don't bother them. They can and will hurt you if they feel threatened and cornered or if they view you as a threat to their cubs. If you have bird feeders out, they can be unbearable pests. I couldn't resist.

I had three tackling my feeder three weeks ago, and another one last night.
