My Dad used to drive us to Polly's from Bedford way back when. I was always fascinated by the plane, and wondered how it could have landed on the roof. Still a mystery to me!

Mystery solved, my uncle had the airplane put upi on the roof by a crane. I am part of the Polly family.

When did this place close? I have fuzzy memories of the Old Oaken Bucket and the cows at Kimball's from my childhood (I didn't live close to Westford then) but I don't have any memory of any other part of route 110 from back then.

Pollys was sold in 1961 to someone else from Westford and was then sold again to Moble Gas Station around 1964 or so. The Old Oaken Bucket was about 2 miles down the road on route 110 towards Kimball's.

If you want to think the plane landed there that's ok. The first plane that was there blew off the roof in the 1938 hurricane (before my time), and was replaced by the plane that is in the picture.

When I was a child living in Shirley, we would go to Dracut to visit my grandparents. My father would take the scenic route, first going past Ayer Auto Sales to show us kids the car on the roof and then past Polly's to see the plane. As a child of 4, I did think the plan landed there but couldn't figure out how they drove the car onto the roof in Ayer.

Actually route 110 was the major road and the scenic route, Route 495 was not built untill a number of years later. I do not remember the car on the roof in Ayer and I use to visit there to see my aunt with my parents.. Interesting on how things change
Now at the corner you have a real nice shopping center. Guess that's progress!!

Sandra, was Polly's ever in Bedford?

Polly's was sold to my dad, Domenic Del Papa, in 1961. He was the one that sold it to Mobile in 1971. We resided in Westford on Rte 110. When he sold Polly's, he moved one of the houses located on that property down the street to the present location of the Enterprise Bank( just before the Regency). I grew up in Westford and graduated from Westford Academy in 1968. I do believe Polly's was located in Bedford before it was moved to Westford or maybe it was the plane that came from Bedford. I will have to ask my mother about that. She'll remember. She's 92 and sharp as a tack!
