Emerson Hospital Expands Rehabilitation Services in Westford

Emerson Hospital recently expanded its rehabilitation services at the Westford location of the Center for Sports Rehabilitation and Specialty Services to better serve area patients, including children.

Located on the third floor of the Westford Health Center at 133 Littleton Road, the rehabilitation space has nearly tripled in size, to 8,000 square feet, offering all of the clinical expertise and state-of-the-art equipment expected at a high-end rehabilitation facility.

The Westford location now provides the same comprehensive services available in Concord for infants to elders: physical therapy for sports and orthopedic injuries; pelvic health; an exercise-based spine rehabilitation program; neurological and balance programs for patients with Parkinson’s disease and vestibular disorders; occupational therapy; speech and language therapy; and a certified hand therapist.

Comprehensive baseline concussion testing is available so athletes’ physicians can compare pre- and post-concussive cognitive and physical performance. This has proven to be valuable since it shows how the brain functions when it is healthy and can then be compared to data gathered after injury. Emerson’s baseline testing includes ImPACt and two measures of balance, Biodex BS and BESS, which provide a comprehensive evaluation of neurocognitive and physical performance.

In addition, a new pediatric gym features swings, tubes and mats to integrate fun and therapy for children with developmental and neurologic conditions. While therapy sessions require a physician referral, the center also offers conditioning and training clinics that are open to the public. Currently, sessions are being held for runners and golfers to reduce injuries and improve performance.

According to Terrie Enis, Emerson’s director of rehabilitation services, the breadth of specialists ensures that patients receive the best care possible for their individual rehabilitation needs.

“As part of a community hospital, we treat it all,” Enis said. “Just as importantly, however, we pride ourselves on using people’s limited time wisely by connecting them immediately with the certified rehab staff who can best help with their specific issue.“
